چکیده

That frontal cortex is involved in visually guided behavior has been known for over a century. Since the pioneering work of Ferrier, several areas in frontal cortex have been identified as having visual responses and playing some role in producing movements of the eyes, head, and limbs. Comprehensive reviews of frontal lobe organization and function have appeared (Fuster, 1989; GoldmanRakic, 1987, 1988; Passingham, 1993; Levin et ai., 1991; Perecman, 1987; Stuss and Benson, 1986; Petrides and Pandya, 1994). This chapter will survey recent findings regarding the possible roles of the different areas of frontal cortex in the production of visually guided movements. Areas of disagreement in the literature will be examined. Although some neurons in primary motor cortex are visually responsive (e.g., Kwan et al., 1985), such signals seem to be fairly nonspecific activations. Most emphasis will be on eye movements and the function of the frontal and supplementary eye fields. Recent experiments will also be reviewed that examine the function of the agranular cortex and the granular dorsolateral and ventrolateral prefrontal cortex. The state of knowledge and the author's competence wane toward the rostral pole. Nevertheless, the orbitofrontal and cingulate cortex are integral if poorly understood parts of frontal cortex that relate to affect and personality. As reviewed in this volume, the visual system in primates seems to be orga-

Visuomotor Functions in the Frontal Lobe.

This review surveys how vision becomes action through the frontal lobe. Signals from extrastriate areas create maps in frontal areas. These maps are shaped by visual features and shaded by goals, values, and experience, and they guide contingent activation of motor circuits to execute coordinated gaze, head, and limb movements. Frontal circuits also support the visual perception of learned obje...

Rapid visuomotor preparation in the human brain: a functional MRI study.

An important feature of human motor behaviour is anticipation and preparation. We report a functional magnetic resonance imaging study of the neuronal activation patterns in the human brain that are associated with the rapid visuomotor preparation of discrete finger responses. Our imaging results reveal a large-scale distributed network of neural areas involved in fast visuomotor preparation, i...

The Neural Signature of Subliminal Visuomotor Priming: Brain Activity and Functional Connectivity Profiles.

Unconscious visuomotor priming defined as the advantage in reaction time (RT) or accuracy for target shapes mapped to the same (congruent condition) when compared with a different (incongruent condition) motor response as a preceding subliminally presented prime shape has been shown to modulate activity within a visuomotor network comprised of parietal and frontal motor areas in previous functi...

Distinct neural correlates of time-on-task and transient errors during a visuomotor tracking task after sleep restriction

Sleep loss leads to both time-on-task slowing of responsiveness and increased frequency of transient response errors. The consequences of such errors during real-world visuomotor tasks, such as driving, are serious and life threatening. To investigate the neuronal underpinning of time-on-task and transient errors during a visuomotor tracking task following sleep restriction, we performed fMRI o...

Evaluation of doses in the Wernicke and Broca’s areas using two different technique in patients with right frontal glioblastoma multiforme

Background: Broca’s and Wernicke’s areas, which are important language areas of brain, are commonly irradiated in patients with right frontal lobe glioblastomamultiforme (GBM). We aimed to compare two different treatment planning techniques in terms of the doses in the Broca’s and Wernicke’s areas for the patients with right frontal GBM. Materials and Methods: Two differ...
